Restaurant Review: Buca di Beppo (Downtown Minneapolis Location)

Mark has a pretty big family so every year on Thanksgiving we draw the name of one adult in the family to buy a gift for on Christmas.

This year one of Mark's older sisters and her husband drew both of our names. Instead of buying us separate gifts, his sister asked for ideas of things we could use together. So obviously I gave her a list of a bunch of restaurants that we had been meaning to try because you MUST go if you have a gift card, right?

Sure enough on Christmas morning we received a gift card to Buca di Beppo. We were thrilled because it was one of the restaurants on the top of our list. Not because it looked extravagant of anything, but they had a bright marquee sign with their name on the building and it intrigued us.

One Sunday afternoon in March (3.25.12) we just happened to be hungry AND in the vicinity of the downtown Buca location. Naturally we stopped in for lunch to use that gift card that had been burning a hole in our pockets for months.

We are currently on a mission to rate pizza places because pizza is one of our favorite meals and one should always have a go-to pizza place. We have decided to rate the places on a typical 1-10 scale based on our opinion of their crust, sauce, toppings, and overall product.

Buca serves what they call "Italian immigrant food", so we knew that we would order a pizza before we set foot inside. We settled on a large margarita pizza because Buca's pizzas are pretty standard and we LOVE a good margarita pizza.

As we were waiting for the pizza our waitress brought out their complementary bread basket with olive oil and balsamic. Since Mark and I love all three of those things, we were ecstatic, but sadly the bread wasn't impressive and we will be skip it in the future.

Fortunately, the bread was the only negative part of our experience at Buca. When the waitress put our margarita pizza on the table I couldn't believe my eyes! I knew we had ordered the large, but what came was a 2' X 1' thin crust monster topped with their tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and basil.

Margarita Pizza From Buca

The crust was thin and crispy, but soft in the middle. Everything we think a thin crust should be. I could drink the tomato sauce. It was light and didn't overpower the pizza. The toppings were to our liking. The melted fresh mozzarella and crisp shredded basil were better than we were expecting, especially from a chain restaurant.

As for our rating we give Buca's margarita pizza:

1. Crust: 7.5 -  Mark was a little disappointed at that the leftover crust was floppy when reheated.

2. Sauce: 8 - Like I said I loved it.

3. Toppings: 8 - Can you go wrong with fresh mozzarella and basil?

Overall, we give it a 7.5. It definitely impressed us with the simplicity of the pizza and how well it all came together.
